I recently attended a talk by Heather McDonnell, Eating Psychology Coach at Whole and Nourished.    She talked about the concept of motivation versus inspiration.

In this context it was applied to health choices.  For example, you may be inspired to stay healthy for your kids or to climb a particular mountain.  In contrast you may be motivated to lose weight and tone up in time for your 20 year high school reunion.

Work and business is the same.  You may be motivated to work so that you can save money, donate to charities, travel, improve your home and save for your future.  In contrast we are inspired by the work itself.  Social workers and physicians are inspired by helping people.  Architects and builders may be inspired by the functions and aesthetics of spaces.  Artists may be inspired by their vision, and chefs by the smells, colors, textures and flavors of the ingredients.

A few ways to think about the difference.  When working under motivation it can feel like work and require discipline.  When working from inspiration it can feel effortless and you often lose track of time.  Motivation is often shorter-term and more specific to a goal.   Inspiration is more timeless and connected to your purpose.

I’d like to hear from you.  Please share in the comments what motivates you and what inspires you.
