Happy 2026!
One of my three chosen theme words for the year is consistency.
And yet, the fast pace of technological change in my profession (and everywhere) is demanding a high level of adaptability.
How do these two concepts play together for me at work?
The consistency applies to HOW I show up – engaged, diligent, curious, open to change, and dedicated to high value for my clients.
The adaptability comes in when executing on the tasks, deliverables, and process changes. The WAY the work is done keeps morphing.
The crucial, fundamental skills of bookkeepers have changed a lot this century. Once upon a time the job was mostly detail-oriented data entry: think recording dates, amounts, names, and numbers correctly, and manually reconciling transaction-by-transaction.
Nowadays the crucial skill is reviewing the balance sheet and P&L frequently, efficiently, and methodically to ensure that all the data – no matter what human, software sync, or bot recorded it – is complete, correct, and not redundant. Does your bookkeeper have a reliable process to do exactly this?
If not, start with our comprehensive self-review course for bookkeepers: https://gibson-insight.teachable.com/p/comprehensive-self-review-for-bookkeepers
